Another four-week module in the 5th semester was Pathology. It included general and neuropathology lectures, presentations of dissected organs such as a uterine myoma or an amputated leg, and microscopy classes.

The microscopy classes were the primary focus during the four weeks. We learned to identify tissues and organs and to recognize the pathological features of approximately 60 general pathologies. Additionally, we were trained to grade and differentiate eight types of brain tumors.

Overall, it was a very interesting module, particularly neuropathology, where advances in diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive markers are progressing rapidly, promising a bright future for the field.

An interesting fact: Secondary brain tumors can arise as a consequence of radiation therapy. For example, this has been observed in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia following cranial radiotherapy.

P.S.: Pathologists seem to be very nice people!
